Wherever the Road Leads

How Things Work

I’ve Always Wondered

I stood in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh watching a display of how a vehicle’s differential works. How does it provide power at different speeds to the inside and outside driven wheels when turning a corner? The down side is that it will spin one wheel that is on ice, while not turning the other.

I watched and watched until it finally made sense to me. I walked away and thirty seconds later I was clueless again. Much older and wiser, now, I understand. It’s magic, that’s how it works, magic.

A Thermos bottle will keep hot coffee hot. A  Thermos bottle will keep cold lemonade cold. How does it know which to do? More magic?

Here are a few items de-mystified…

When you look at the explanations of the mechanical items, you might be able to say, “Oh…, I see..”, but I have to wonder, who was the genius that dreamed up this simple idea? A Magician, no doubt.

the swallowing part interests me as I have a problem getting pills and sometimes even liquid to go down and no medical reasons can be determined. Loblaws here has a similar idea for a commercial -who thought to do this ?? roast coffee beans etc.
