What’s In A Name

Once upon a time in a land far away called ‘When I Was Married’, I had a step-son named “Junior”. His name wasn’t actually “Junior” but to let it be known that his name was ‘Lee’ wouldn’t be fair to the precocious little imp if he were to stumble across this blog. No doubt the ne’er-do-well is now a lawyer or in jail – or both – but definitely a Democrat.

Junior was a nine-year-old heathen when I married his mother, so was still in the early grades in school. His teacher had asked her students to do an essay on their pets. At the time we had a tabby cat named ‘Natchez’, named after the Natchez Trace Parkway. I didn’t want the responsibility of a cat but we had gone to the local Animal Shelter where this little kitten found my ex-wife. She asked if we could take it home and I adamantly said, “No’.

It took about twenty minutes for the Animal Shelter to process the paperwork and our now-expanded happy family drove home. ‘Natchez’ was a great addition to the family and a fun little kitten who enjoyed a meal. His scrawny little fleabag frame soon developed a paunch and it didn’t take me long to start commenting on it.

Junior’s essay was quite a good descriptive story of Natchez which ended, “That’s the story of my cat, Natchez, also known as Chunky the Fleabag.”

That had me in hysterics. Firstly because I thought it was a funny line but also because I was astounded that the kid listened to anything I said.

That summer, we went on a family vacation stopping at various places but going as far as Vicksburg, Mississippi. On our way back to Alabama, on I-20 in Mississippi, we passed the exit for a town called “Chunky”. The town named after our cat. Twenty years later I have been able to fulfill my dream of returning.
